About ICCBBA
ICCBBA manages, develops and licenses ISBT 128--the international information
standard for blood and tissue identification, labeling, transfusion and
transplantation-- as a non-profit organization connecting health
care facilities throughout the world.
The organization maintains the ISBT 128 international databases
for Facility Identification and Product Coding. Through its information
management systems, licensing practices, and educational initiatives, ICCBBA
operates to ensure compatibility of ISBT 128 with existing regulations
and standards by interacting in an official capacity with regulatory and
other standard-setting bodies around the globe. In all matters concerning
the use of ISBT 128, ICCBBA is charged with maintaining the Technical
Specification and Licensing requirements and disseminating information
to health care workers defining the ISBT 128 standard.
More than Identification
Transfusion and transplantation are rapidly evolving fields where precise
identification of, and information about, blood and tissue products are
essential components of a health care system that spans borders, nationalities
and every type of medical condition, emergency and requirement. To assure
accuracy, safety and efficiency in a global health care effort, it is imperative
to capture and maintain a comprehensive profile of donations, collection
facilities, products and significant events in the transfusion/transplant
life cycle. More than identification, ISBT 128 gives health care personnel
the knowledge they need to make more informed decisions when handling blood,
tissue and organ products in every type of situation.
The ISBT 128 standard provides a method for systematically encoding
and tracking Facility Identification Numbers that allows for global uniqueness
in donation numbering in order to ensure the safe movement of products
across national boundaries and disparate health care systems. The use of
international reference tables for product codes means that each and every
product can be clearly identified even where language barriers exist.
Year-round, ICCBBA brings together experts from clinical, scientific and
informatics backgrounds in a continuing effort to review and update the
ISBT 128 standard for compatibility, extensibility and accountability worldwide.
ICCBBA's Board of Directors and members of its Technical Advisory Groups
(TAGs) are volunteers who give freely of their time and effort. ICCBBA,
has a small permanent staff who manage the technical documentation and
databases, promote and support the global implementation of the standard,
organize technical meetings, and administer registrations and licensing.
How Is ICCBBA Operated?
ICCBBA operations are funded entirely from licensing fees collected from
both facilities using the ISBT 128 standard and from vendors providing
equipment or software that incorporates the standard.
